Crew Insurance
A type of marine insurance arising out of the obligation of the policyholder to indemnify the costs of damage to the life and health of crew members in the performance of their duties.
The Maritime Labour Code (MLC 2006) obliges shipowners to provide material support to seafarers in the event of sickness, injury or death occurring on board a ship during and/or as a result of service.
The life, health and fitness for work of each member of the team is covered.
The following risks are covered:
- Death as a result of an accident or illness.
- Bodily injuries resulting from an accident.
- Permanent total incapacity for work resulting in a Group I-III disability due to an accident.
- Partial incapacity as a result of an accident.
The insurance must also cover:
- Treatment of team members.
- Costs for emergency medical care, hospitalisation and transport of crew members.
- Repatriation and burial costs of crew members who die as a result of an accident or illness.
- Costs related to an accident or an anomaly (anomaly due to illness) of a crew member.
