Travel insurance – this is insurance against unexpected travel costs. An insurance policy, taken out in good time, provides comprehensive cover both during the trip and in the lead-up to it. You can be insured against three main risks and a number of additional risks. Some insurance companies offer already developed packages with different levels of cover.
Main insurance risks
Medical expenses insurance
Reimbursement of ambulance costs incurred as a result of sudden illness, an exacerbation of a chronic illness or an accident during travel. The insurance covers the cost of a visit to the doctor, the cost of medicines, medical care, hospitalisation and, if necessary, transport. It will also cover the costs of prolonging the journey during the period of sickness and, if necessary, the costs of accommodation and transport for the accompanying person.
Trip disruption or interruption
Compensation for tickets or services already purchased and additional costs related to ticket exchanges or new ticket purchases. It also covers the costs of planned holidays cancelled due to flight delays or accidents. NOTE: The policy must be taken out in good time, according to the terms and conditions.
Baggage insurance
Baggage protection against theft, loss and damage. Reimbursement of the cost of essential items in the event of baggage delay.
In addition, it is possible to insure:
- Accident cover for the duration of the trip
- Possible costs for legal assistance
- Civil liability insurance for third parties during the trip
- In the event of baggage delay, it is also possible to insure the purchase or hire of clothing for a sports or official reception.
- Trip cancelled due to volcanic eruption (with the exception of two volcanoes in Iceland which became active in 2010 and 2011).
For regular trips abroad, it is a good idea to take out a repeat travel insurance policy. This policy is valid for one calendar year, but cover is limited to a certain period of time abroad, as specified in the policy. The policy must be drawn up according to the area of travel: Scandinavian countries, Europe, the whole world except the USA and Canada, or the whole world.
If the purpose of the trip is for work or sport, this must be communicated and discussed in advance.
NB: It is important to remember that strikes by transport workers are not considered as an insurance case!
